Scientists show BPA exposure can affect ovary function in women
New research has indicated that high exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) may affect reproductive function in humans and lead to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in women pre-disposed to the condition.
The study, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, compared the levels of BPA and hormones in 71 women with PCOS with those of 100 women without the condition. The results showed that levels of BPA were significantly higher in women with PCOS than those with normal ovulation patterns, and that there was a strong association between high levels of BPA and the occurrence of PCOS. Increased BPA levels also correlated with increased levels of the hormone testosterone and insulin resistance in both groups of women.
“BPA is a potent endocrine disrupting chemical, and it has been shown that the ovary is sensitive to increased BPA exposure,” says Evanthia Diamanti-Kandarakis, lead researcher based at the Medical School University of Athens.“In susceptible, dysfunctional gonads, BPA exposure may lead to subsequent PCOS development, as experiments in rats have already shown.”
